Bombings: Police tighten security in FCT

The police and other security agencies have stepped up security in the Federal Capital Territory following Tuesday bomb blasts in Kano and Yobe States which claimed over 37 lives.

Findings indicated that the security agencies had raised the security alert for the FCT to prevent a similar incident in the city.

Security sources said more covert intelligence officers have been deployed in strategic parts of the FCT, including motor parks, shopping malls, markets and other public places to frustrate any plot to replicate the Kano and Potiskum bombings in Abuja.

“The security agencies have been on red alert following the bombings in Kano and Yobe States; we won’t be caught unawares again. We have deployed men on covert operations to important places, but I can’t give much details for strategic reasons,” a security officer said.

Our correspondent observed many police teams patrolling different parts of the city and maintaining studious watch and inspection of passing motorists.

Different areas and junctions including Sheraton Hotel junction along Herbert Macaulay Way, Central Business District, Shehu Shagari Way, Julius Berger Roundabout, AYA Roundabout, Area one Roundabout and others have sharp-looking policemen on duty.

The policemen were supported by operatives of the Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and others.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the police and other security agencies were aware of the security threat posed by terrorists to the FCT and are collaborating to foil any plot to attack the city.

“All security agencies are collaborating with the police to foil any plot to attack the FCT; you can see our operatives on the streets working to protect lives and property. I wish to call on Nigerians to support the security forces by giving information that could help us do our job better,” he said.

Meanwhile, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, has reiterated his warning to politicians and their supporters to desist from all acts of violence ahead of the general elections.

Inalegwu, who gave the warning when the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security met with stakeholders in the FCT, noted that anyone caught in the act of violence would be arrested and prosecuted irrespective of his or her status in the society.
