MEND congratulates Buhari

THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta on Wednesday congratulated the winner of the March 28 presidential election, General Muhammadu Buhari.

MEND had in the past expressed its support for Buhari’s bid for the presidency, an action that had sparked a disagreement between it and former militant leaders.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the militant group, Jomo Gbomo, it pointed that Nigerians made the right choice of new leadership by electing the former Head of State.

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta extends our heartfelt congratulations to President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the 2015 presidential elections.

“The Nigerian people have spoken and elected General Mohammadu Buhari to be the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In doing so, we have not only made the right choice of a new leadership, we have also reaffirmed the strength of our democracy.

“President-elect General Mohammadu Buhari’s message of hope, freedom and opportunity resonates with our group, as it does with the Nigerian people. In these difficult times, with the economic crisis and security challenges, we are confident that under your leadership, Nigeria will once again regain its peace and Unity,” the group stated.

MEND, however, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat to Buhari, describing his (Jonathan) action as a show of sportsmanship.

The militant group prayed God to grant Buhari and those who would serve with him the strength and wisdom to lead the country.

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta also wishes to commend President Goodluck Jonathan for his outstanding show of Statesmanship in conceding defeat and setting precedence as the first ever incumbent Nigerian President to be defeated and concede defeat, without any interference.

“May the Lord grant President-elect General Mohammadu Buhari and all those who will serve with him wisdom, strength and compassion in the coming years,” MEND prayed.
