People’s Democratic Party loyalists from Ikpoba-Okha local government area in Edo State on Friday, have vowed to resist a repeat of the senatorial elections rescheduled for Saturday.
PDP Agent for Ikpoba-Okha LGA, Mr. Erube Godwin who led protesters to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Benin, described the rescheduled elections as an attempt to subvert the will of the people.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini had previously announced that there would be a repeat of the senatorial elections which was suspended on March 28, in six LGAs in the state.
The affected areas were said to be three wards and 12 polling units in Ikpoba-Okha LGAs, two wards and 12 polling units in Oredo LGAs, two wards and three polling units in Ovia North East LGAs, two Wards and two polling units in Ovia South West LGAs, six Wards and 12 polling units of Uhunmode and the entire wards and all the polling units in Orhionmwon LGAs.
Godwin said, “We have in our possession the results from the senatorial elections conducted on March 28 in ward 7 at Ikpoba-Okha, which was duly served by the presiding officers and all party representatives.
“If the results of the presidential election also conducted in the same ward, have been duly accepted, then why is the INEC rejecting the results of the senatorial elections?”
Godwin accused several commissioners serving in the cabinet of the State Governor as responsible for the change of events.
He said the Commissioner of Works, Mr. Osarondion Ogie, Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Mr. Victor Ekahtor and Commissioner of Justice Henry Idahagbon had all voted in various poling units in ward 7 where the rescheduled senatorial elections are to take place.
Godwin said, “These commissioners voted in this ward where the INEC cancelled the senatorial elections. This is an attempt by the government to change things in their favour and we will resist that attempt. INEC must tell us if the result of the senatorial elections which we have in our possession is not from them.”
A PDP Youth leader in Ikpoba-Okha, who identified himself simply as Bruno, described the rescheduled senatorial elections as suspicious.
He said, “The results of the presidential and house of representative elections also conducted on the same day as the senatorial elections, was accepted by the INEC.
“So to our surprise yesterday, we heard on the television that those of the senatorial elections would be conducted again on Saturday. The REC would have to explain why this should be so.”
While the protest was ongoing outside the INEC’s office, Igini was said to be in a closed door meeting with security chiefs in the state, over preparations for the April 11 elections.
