United Nations World Population Prospects report said on Wednesday that India would in six years sooner than previously forecast overtake China and become the world’s most populous country. John Wilmoth, Head of the UN Population division said in New York, that the report indicated that Nigeria was on course to outstrip the US by 2050 to become the third largest population. He said that the current global population of 7.3 billion was forecast to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, slightly above the last set of UN projections. Wilmoth said that most growth would happen in developing regions, particularly Africa. Nigerian male and female powerlifters won 11 medals and broke three world records at the just-concluded Powerlifting World Open Asian Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Almaty 2015 IPC Powerlifting Asian Open championships, which began on July 26, ended on July 30. Feyisetan Are, the coach of the Nigeria Powerlifting Federation, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria  via an online message on Thursday from Kazakhstan. A middle aged man in Utonkon Obarike, Oturkpo Local Government Area of Benue State, on Monday beheaded another middle aged man from Obi, Obi Local Government Area also in Benue State. Findings by one of our correspondent revealed that the incident happened in the early hours of Monday in the late man’s compound. Though, The PUNCH could not get the names of the two men as of the time of filling in this report, the Police Public Relations Officer, Austin Ezeani, confirmed the incident, saying the matter was currently being investigated by the Oturkpo Area Division of the command. Ezeani alleged that the gory incident happened as a result of land dispute between the two of them. A native of Obi, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, alleged that he was among those that apprehended the suspected murderer. The source explained that when they interrogated the suspect, he confessed that he wanted to use the deceased’s head for ritual.

Two female doctors were raped at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) when armed robbers invaded the health care centre, Chairman of Resident Doctors Association at the hospital, Dr Ikechukwu Ukweh said. Addressing journalists, he said that was one of the reasons they embarked on an indefinite strike. He said the strike was to demand payment of salaries, training entitlements as well as upgrade of facilities.
